How Orthodox Easter is dated

The Orthodox churches keep Easter on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, as the Council of Nicaea set it, but reckoned in the Julian calendar. Converted to the calendar on our walls, that puts Pascha between April 4 and May 8. Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and the Orthodox around the world celebrate it on the same day. For the Western date, see the Easter countdown.

Questions and answers

When is Orthodox Easter 2027?

Sunday, May 2, 2027. Western Easter that year is March 28.

Why is Orthodox Easter on a different day from Western Easter?

Both follow the first Sunday after the spring full moon, but the Orthodox churches work it out with the Julian calendar, which runs 13 days behind the Gregorian one. Some years the two fall on the same Sunday, as in 2028 on April 16.
