How the date is worked out

The Chinese calendar begins each month at the new moon, as seen in China’s time zone, so the 15th day of a month comes at or near the full moon. The Mid-Autumn Festival is the eighth month’s, the harvest moon of the calendar’s autumn.

How it’s celebrated

Families gather to eat mooncakes and look at the moon, and children carry lanterns. The day is a public holiday in mainland China and Taiwan; Hong Kong and Macau take the day after it off.

Wednesday, September 15, 2027. After that it falls on October 3, 2028 and September 22, 2029.

Why does the date change every year?

It is the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar, when the moon is full or nearly so. The calendar’s months follow the moon, so the festival moves between early September and early October.

Is it the same day as Chuseok and Tết Trung Thu?

Yes, in every year from 2026 to 2031. Korea’s Chuseok and Vietnam’s Tết Trung Thu are the 15th day of the eighth month of their own calendars, which give the same day as China’s in those years.
