About Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr, the “festival of breaking the fast”, is the first day of Shawwal, the month after
Ramadan. It begins with a morning prayer, and the gift to the poor (zakat al-fitr) is made before
it. The dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar; where the month waits for the local sighting of the new moon, Eid may
come a day later.
