What the 20-20-20 rule is
Looking at a screen keeps your eyes focused close up for a long time, and people blink less while they do. The 20-20-20 rule breaks that up: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (about 6 meters) away for 20 seconds. A window, the far end of a room or a corridor all work.
The American Optometric Association recommends it for digital eye strain, also called computer vision syndrome.
How this timer helps
- Press Start reminding me. It rings every 20 minutes while this tab is open.
- When it rings, look away. The window counts down the 20 seconds and chimes softly when they’re up.
- Change the interval or the length of the break if you like, and limit it to your working hours.
